SWIGGIS & Girl Scouts of Central Texas to Host an Orienteering Day!

SWIGGIS will be hosting an orienteering day at the Nalle Bunny Run Wildlife Preserve to familiarize middle school and high school aged Girl Scouts with Geography, GPS, Orienteering, and GIS. There will be four stations at the event.

April 3, 2010

9 a.m. - 12 p.m. (Volunteers should expect to arrive at 8:00 a.m.)

Volunteers will be essential to the success of the event.  If you are current, past, or prospective member of SWIGGIS please sign up using the volunteer form.  For additional questions contact Carolyn Defoore.

 

Volunteers will also have a chance to tour the Nalle Bunny Run on the morning of March 3.  Please sign up as a volunteer if you would like to participate in the tour.  Here is a detail map of the location.

 

We will need volunteers on four teams and at least one team leader for each team.  The day of the event there will be a station at the Wildlife Preserve for each of the four stations below.  Please indicate on the form if you are interested in being a team leader.  Team leaders will be in charge of coordinating the activity and other volunteers.

1.Use a USGS map to learn how to interpret a legend, map symbols, and contour lines.

2. Learn the parts of a compass and learn how to take a compass bearing from a map.

 

1. Find a geocache that has been hidden on the Nalle Bunny Run property by utilizing GPS technology.

1. A service project will be arranged through the Hill Country Conservancy to help maintain the wildlife preserve.

1. Arrange an interview with a professional geographer.
