Girlstart: Girls in STEM

STEM = Science   Technology   Engineering   Math

The Girlstart conference was held March 26, 2011 on the UT-Austin campus, 9:30 a.m.- 3:30 p.m.  Girlstart Presenter Flyer 2011

Six SWIGGIS ladies presented to three groups of 15-20, 4th – 8th grade girls on the cutting edge topic of LiDAR technology.  The girls learned about all aspects of LiDAR from the basics of the electromagnetic spectrum to the uses of 3d technology in movies, maps and more!  They were able to experience how a laser reacts to water, vegetation or land; how it collects data in points; and thanks to Zebra Imaging, they were able to see 3d holographic images created from LiDAR data!

Girlstart is a local organization that focuses on supporting girls in math, science and technology (so awesome!).  It “is a non-profit organization created to empower girls to excel in math, science, and technology. Founded in 1997 in Austin,Texas, Girlstart has quickly established itself as a best-case practices leader in empowering, educating, and motivating girls to enjoy and become more proficient in math, science and technology.”  ~girlstart.org

Thank you Ilyanna and Lori for organizing our involvement and presentation!  And thank you to Sara, Laura & Elisa for all your assistance the day of the event – you rock!
